We will contact you if a follow up appointment is needed or a prescription is waiting to be collected.
If you wish to check for test results yourself, you can do so by calling the surgery after 11am or by using our Online Consultation Service.
As a rough guide, test results take the following time to be returned from the hospital.
- Some blood tests take up to 10 days (most 4 to 5)
- X-ray results up to 10 days
- Cervical Smear take 3 to 6 weeks
You will be told how long you should expect to wait for the results at the time of your test so please bear this in mind before calling. If required, make any necessary follow-up appointment.
About Blood Tests
A blood test is when a sample of blood is taken for testing in a laboratory. Blood tests have a range of uses and are one of the most common types of medical test. For example, a blood test can be used to:
- Assess your general state of health
- Confirm the presence of bacterial or viral infection
- See how well certain organs, such as the liver and kidneys, are functioning
A blood test usually involves the phlebotomist taking a blood sample from a blood vessel in your arm, and the usual place for a sample is the inside of the elbow or wrist, where the veins are relatively close to the surface. Blood samples from children are most commonly taken from the back of the hand. The child’s hand will be anaesthetised (numbed) with a special cream before the sample is taken.
